But given the artful yet obvious exposure of superficial codes and attitudes in that comedy, it seems more likely that the young poet of Two Gentlemen was simply not yet able to poetize dramatically, to adapt his flights to distinguish lovers true from false. Lucetta says she thinks Proteus is fond of her, but Julia is too embarrassed to admit that she likes him, and so behaves coyly.
As the play begins, Valentine is preparing to leave Verona for Milan so as to broaden his horizons. He pleads with his best friend, Proteus, to accompany him.
Instead, Celia falls in love with the page i. The offer of the woman from one male friend to another would therefore be the highest expression of friendship from one point of view, a low point of psycho-sexual regression from another.
When Proteus arrives, he too falls in love with Silvia, despite his feelings for Julia. It refers to him as "an upstart crow … that with his Tygers hart wrapt in a Players hyde, supposes he is as well able to bombast out a blanke verse as the best of you": As in Greene, so almost always in early Shakespeare.
Silvia is not convinced, however. Carroll argues, like Schlueter, that Valentine is indeed giving Silvia to Proteus, but unlike Schlueter, Carroll detects no sense of farce. Bond writes "Shakespeare first opens the vein he worked so richly afterwards — the vein of crossed love, of flight and exile under the escort of the generous sentiments; of disguised heroines, and sufferings endured and virtues exhibited under their disguise; and of the Providencekinder than life, that annuls the errors and forgives the sin.
Proteus uses Julia, disguised as Sebastian, to send Silvia gifts, including the ring that Julia gave him. We shall never know why, so early in his career, he was not content to essay only one tradition at a time; as we shall see, each offered more than enough material.
Eventually, after a combat in a wood, Felix and Felismena are reunited. Derrick also interprets the BBC production in this manner, arguing that "Proteus clearly perceives the offer as a noble gesture of friendship, not an actual offer, because he does not even look towards Silvia but rather falls into an embrace with Valentine" although Derrick does raise the question that if Valentine is not offering Silvia to Proteus, why does Julia swoon?
Thurio claims that Silvia is his property, but Valentine threatens Thurio.
He introduces her to Titus, but Titus is overcome with jealousy, and vows to seduce her. Individuals are judged as individuals in this setting, and the breakdown of traditional structure permits the flow of currents of behavior homosexuality, merit-based social mobility, etc.
However, Valentine tells Proteus that he plans to free her by means of a corded ladder, and together, they will elope. Meanwhile, Julia is discussing Proteus with her maid, Lucetta, who tells Julia that she thinks Proteus is fond of her.
For the original audience, dramatic suspense must have centered not in whether but in how all would be made to go well; the conflicting conventions were equally popular, and the contrary expectations they raise seem equally encouraged well into the last scene.
The word "facetious" Latin facetus did not have the overtone of waggish jocularity we now give it: If a modern production emphasizes their self-conscious posturing, thereby implying that Shakespeare was having fun at their expense, it must rely on gestures, voice inflections, costuming, or whatever else the director decides to bring into the text.

Lucetta, by advising Julia in the practical matter of disguising herself as a man, demonstrates her knowledge of socially-accepted gender roles.
They are on their way to their leader, Valentine, when they run into Proteus and the disguised Julia. I believe there is. Proteus rescues Silvia, who runs further into the forest. Proteus threatens to rape Silvia, but Valentine intervenes and denounces Proteus.
